I’m interested in rules. But mostly, I’m interested in breaking them.
It’s what drove me to Project Hollywood, and literally informs every decision I make.
I will ask myself, “What’s the rule here, and why are we following it?” I often break it consciously, if there is no good reason to do it. Very often, this is the case.
I have found that most people don’t even “think” about this, and therefore never even know that their lives are being driven by old rules that don’t even apply anymore, and certainly do not serve us.
My wife and I were brainstorming over the weekend about how the cultural landscape is shifting around us very, very quickly. In particular, things are rapidly changing vis-a-vis work, location, money and lifestyle. It’s so exciting to witness how people can become more and more free of old bonds and find more freedom for themselves. It’s available to us, now we just have to apply ourselves and work in a very new way.
This discussion hinged on the “rules”, defining the old ones and new ones.
A “rule”, defined by us for the purposes of this discussion, is a pattern of living and being which has been turned on its head revealing a new possibility.
The catalyst for most of these is the internet, and other new technologies. Whether it’s the possibility of building a business online, or in how communication (and ideas) are so easily spread, new thinking is permeating every area of society.
Here’s our very prelim list of the old rules and the new ones. Definitely welcome your input here as we flesh this out. We will start with the old, and then list the new (in corresponding order).
OLD:
Work a day job until you retire
Travel for vacations, live for the weekend
More possessions = more happiness
Work isn’t supposed to be fun
Don’t stand out, look and dress like everybody else
Higher education is necessary to succeed
If you get sick go to a doctor (healing comes from the outside)
Chronic disease is outside your control
Meat and dairy are necessary for survival and strength
More action = more results
Thinking positive leads to disappointment
My reality is out of my control, “it is what it is”
Work and home are in a fixed place
I’m too old to change
NEW:
Build a business that leverages systems so I can work when I want
Have a flex schedule, travel when you want, work from the road
Less is more
What’s fun can make money and abundance
Stand out, get noticed, be yourself
Follow your bliss, it will lead you to success – life is your teacher
You can heal yourself
Chronic disease is the result of food and lifestyle choices
A whole food plant based diet has everything I need for long term health and wellness
Smart action and time management gives results
Positive outlook creates positive growth and results
I create my own reality
I can live and work anywhere in the world
I can change if I think I can change
Now, I’m not advocating that one take on all of these and I’m really not interested in delving into the politics of education or paleo vs vegan. I think it’s exciting though to know what new ideas are being circulated leading to a more expansive, free lifestyle.
In other words, it’s not all about us doing the same thing – it’s that we can now do things so differently. There is truly an abundance of choice.
